Environmental Sustainability?

What is Sustainability?

AIM

Students will learn about sustainability and how they can communicate and share its message with  a given audience.

OBJECTIVES

  • to foster in students an understanding of environmental sustainability.
  • to develop in students an understanding about the role of people in helping the community be more Sustainable
  • to gather and evaluate information on the 10 sustainable actions in The Sustainable Household Challenge
  • to generate participation in the Sustainable Household Challenge
  • to explore different communication strategies that relate to particular audience
  • to create sustainability actions to the classroom and school environment
  • to  inform peers across schhols of current sustainable practices and understandings through the use  web 2 tools eg. Learning  Management System ~myclasses ,blogs and wikis  & widgets to share knowledge across schools on Sustainability (Voki, Bitstrips, podcasting)

The action research component allows students become communicators and leaders in our society. Throughout the unit  students will be challenged to ask questions, research, problem solve, think deeper, design, create, evaluate commnicate and assess.

Research Questions

In small groups,

  • Formulate 4-6 questions about the topic of Sustainability that you would like to know more about. See Thinking Key activities
  • Choose an appropriate search engine to locate information on the web
  • List key words they will use to search the web or use possible links below
  • Record  ideas/plan on word document/wiki page or blog and present to teacher
  • Make changes from feedback provided and present information on a wiki or blog for peers, parents and teachers to view and to respond.

On February 26th ten eggs arrived and by early hours on Tuesday ‘pipping’ could be heard coming from the eggs. Soon the chicken kicked free of their shells and entered the big world.

Worm Juice & Castings ` Liquid Gold for your Plants’

Yes it’s true, worms do worms wiggle and squiworm-tea.gifworm-tea.gifrm  but they are amazing  garbage-munching fiends. We have two wonderful ‘Can-O Worms’ Wormery. It is a  clean, handy is very earth-friendly for home and school. We put compost from the tuckshop, leftovers and home scraps into the composter. We cut the food into iddy biddy bits to make it easier for the worms to munch. Each week we drain of ‘worm juice’ and bottle it. The bottles of juice are sold for $5 a litre and this money then pays to feed our chooks. Learn more by clicking on our Wormery link.
